Gordon A. Carpenter, 86, of Hawarden, Iowa died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 at the Hawarden Community Hospital. Funeral service was Dec. 17 at the First Baptist Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Stuart Schreur officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.
Gordon Albert Carpenter was born Dec. 24,1916 on the family farm in Union County, S. D., the son of Albert and Ester (Finch) Carpenter. He received his education at Miller School and then worked with his father on the farm until entering military service.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 with 33 months of that time spent in North Africa and Europe.
On Aug. 7,1949 he married Marjorie Malmberg at Allen, Neb. The couple made their home in Hawarden, where Gordon worked for Otis Radio for over 20 years and later operated a shoe repair shop. He retired in 1983.
Gordon was a member of the First Baptist Church.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; one daughter, Pam Priborsky of Lyons, Colo.; one son, Alan of Minneapolis, Minn.; two granddaughters; a brother, Merle of Longmont, Colo.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother Glenn.
