From the Thursday, September 1, 1938 Hawarden Independent:

Death Claims Pioneer Farmer

John McGrory, 79, retired farmer, of LeMars, passed away at his home last Thursday morning, Aug. 25th, following an illness of several months. Funeral services were held at St. James church in LeMars at 9 o'clock Saturday morning with Rev. Fr. L. J. Cooper officiating.

John McGrory was born Nov. 8, 1858, at Lyons, Clinton county, Iowa, and grew to manhood on his father's farm near Bryant, Iowa. He was married to Catherine Marron Oct. 24,1884, and they came to western Iowa March 1, 1888, and settled on a farm four miles south of Ireton. They lived on this farm until 1916 when they retired and moved to LeMars.

Eight children were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are John and William McGrory of Sioux City; Joseph and James McGrory of Ireton; Mrs. George Dirks of Madison, S. D., and Mrs. Nick Flaherty of Chatsworth. There are also seven grandchildren. Mrs. McGrory passed away in October, 1927.

Another old settler of this vicinity passed away in the death of John McGrory. For 28 years he lived with his father on the farm that still bears his name to this day. In all these years he was highly regarded by all who knew him, being a real neighbor and friend to everyone and was always ready and willing to aid and assist where need, seemed to be. Since living in LeMars, he made regular trips to the farm where his sons have been carrying on. It was on this home farm where the children came to bless the home and grew up. The writer was well acquainted with the deceased and counted him among his friends and can add his testimony to the fine traits of the deceased. Sympathy goes out to the children and the grandchildren in their loss.

Poster's note: The obituary says "lived with his father on the farm" but may have meant family rather than father.
