Gertrude M. Douma

Mrs. Gertrude M. Douma, age 86, of Orange City, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, in the nursing wing of the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Gertrude was born September 17, 1898, at Orange City, the daughter of Gerrit Mulder and Gertrude Hoekstra Mulder. She graduated from Northwestern Academy in Orange City, and was a school teacher until 1937. She then became a bookkeeper, employed by several different businesses in Orange City, Hull, and Sioux Center. She worked at the Sioux Center Sales Company until the age of 67.

On Dec. 15, 1941, Gertrude married Gossen Douma at Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, Hull, and later Sioux Center. Mr. Douma passed away March 28, 1956. Mrs. Douma then returned to Orange City. In Sept. of 1978 she became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in October of 1979 she transferred to the nursing wing.

Mrs. Douma was a member of the First Reformed Church of Orange City where she had been active in women's organizations. She was a former member of the Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center.

Survivors include her children, George and Louise of Marshfield, Wis., three grandchildren, Michelle, Mike and Mark; and a sister, Mrs. John (Martha) Vermeer of Boyden.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Ed, Cornie, William, John and Gerrit; and two sisters, Agnes Kuiken and Rena Maassen.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Cecil Martens officiating. Interment followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City.
