Funeral services were held this week for two young Hawarden mothers who died from injuries suffered in a car and oil transport collision last Thursday night.

They were Mrs. Sam Schlickenmayer,26, mother of four children and Mrs. Gerald Dowdey, 22, mother of two.

The condition of Mr. Schlickenmayer, who suffered serious chest injuries, yesterday afternoon was reported as “improving” by the attending physician who said Mr. Schlickenmayer had a good chance to recover.

Mr. Dowdey, the other occupant of the car, was released from the hospital Saturday.

Mrs. Schlickenmayer, who was thrown through the windshield when the car struck the oil transport head on , died about 1:15 Friday morning, about a half hour after she arrived at the Hawarden Hospital in the Rose ambulance.
Mrs. Dowdey died at the hospital about 4:30 Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred four and one half miles west of Hawarden about 12:15 Friday morning. All of the car’s occupants, except Mr. Dowdey, were unconscious when the ambulance arrived.
Mr. Schlickenmayer was driving the car. The driver of the Dan Dugan oil transport of Sioux Falls was not injured.

Mrs. Schlickenmayer was born at Akron, December 21, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Margaret Carr. When she was about a year and a half the family came to Hawarden. She attended the Hawarden schools and was graduated from high school in 1939.

The following year on February 2 she was married to Sam Schlickenmayer. Four children were born to this union. While her husband was in the service Mrs. Schlickenmayer lived with her mother. At present the children are with the grandmother.

She is survived by her husband and four children, Larry Lawrence,6, Diana 41/2, Nancy 14 months, and Joyce, an infant of only a month; her mother, Mrs. Margaret Carr, and five sisters and brothers, Mrs. Sadie Lowell and Clarence Carr of Hawarden, Mrs. Agnes McNamara of Alcester, Mrs. Irene Forslund of Akron, Mrs. Florence Hutmacher of Gann Valley, South Dakota, Mrs. Cecelia Kerrer and Dan and Everett Carr of Sioux City, Raymond Carr of Cousla, California, and Leo M. Carr of Shoshoni, Wyoming.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home with Rev. Milton M. Schaper of the Methodist Church in charge. Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery.
