Henry Bernard Vande Griend, 73, of Hull died Friday, April 6, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

Services were Monday at First Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Carl Klompien officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery.

Vande Griend was born April 13, 1927, in Hull, the son of Jake H. and Anna (Zwagerman) Vande Griend. He was raised in Hull, where he graduated from Western Christian High School. He served in the U.S. Army toward the end of World War II. He married Angeline Van't Hul, in June 1949. She died in 1961 in Larchwood. He married Joyce Woudstra Vander Tuig in August 1963. They farmed at Boyden and Doon. He retired this past February.

He was an active member of First Christian Reformed Church, where he served on the council, taught Sunday School and catechism classes and started the Cadets. He was also a member of the Gideons, Kiwanis, American Legion and Lyon County Farm Bureau, where he held many offices. He served on the board of directors of the Christian school and many other organizations. He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Alethea and Jim Oostenink of Hull and Sandra and Larry Starkenburg of Hull; three sons, Dennis and his wife Jackie Vande Griend of Doon, Bernard J. and his wife, Alesia Vande Griend of Sioux Falls and Benjamin Vande Griend of Doon; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; two brothers, Irwin Vande Griend of Edgerton, Minnesota, and Edward Vande Griend of Sioux Falls; a sister, Joanne Jansma of Sioux Falls; and two nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Ivan.

Memorials are being directed to the Gideons.
