Melvin "Dutch" Ver Steeg, 80, of Sheldon, died Saturday, March 7, 1992 at a Sioux City hospital.

A family service was held at 10:30am Wednesday at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon. The Rev. Kenneth Tenckinck and The Rev. Robert Wallinga officaited. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery. A memorial service was held at 11am Wednesday at Bethel Reformed Chruch in Sheldon.

Mr. Ver Steeg was born Jan. 23, 1912 in Boyden, the son of John and Hendreka (Moret)Ver Steeg. He graduated from Sheldon High School in 1929 and attended Sheldon Junior College. He married Eunice De Bruin June 30, 1937 in Hospers. He worked at, and later owned, the White House Clothing Store in Sheldon for 50 years, retiring in 1978.

Mr. Ver Steeg was a member of Bethel Reformed Church where he was a former Sunday School teacher, choir director and consistory member. He was a charter member of the Sheldon Kiwanis Club and Prairie Queen Kiwanis Club, both of Sheldon. He served on Hope College Board of Trustees of Holland, Mich., and was a former board member of the First Savings and Loan of Sheldon. He presently was treasurer of the Christian Retirement Home, having served in that capacity for 45 years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Melvin Jr. and his wife Rebecca of Eugene, Ore., and John of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Verna Hyink of Sheldon and Mrs. Viola Vollmer of Dunedin, Fla.; two brothers, Cedric of Bellflower, Calif.; and Henry of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Leah and Rachel.
