Dick Bronkhorst

Dick Bronkhorst, 56, of Hawarden died Wednesday, March 28, 1984, in the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, after a brief illness.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 30, in the Community Church in Hawarden. The Rev. Ralph Van Rheenen officiated. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery under direction of the Dow Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Ralph Bruget, Adrian Kool, Lee Landenberger, William Hill, Elmer Bell and Marvin Schwiesow.

Mr. Bronkhorst was born Dec. 23, 1927, in the Netherlands. He served with the underground forces in the 1940s in the Netherlands and accompanied the Canadian Forces. He also served in the Dutch army. He came to the United States and to Hudson, SD, in 1948. He served in the Korean conflict. He married Vivian Marra Aug. 14, 1953, in Hospers. They moved to Hawarden in 1958. He managed a lumber yard in Hawarden, Hudson and Sheldon and at the time of his death was a self-employed building contractor.

He was a member of the Community Church, American Legion, VFW, Eagles Lodge and the West Sioux Sportman's Club.

Survivors include his wife; four sons. Richard, Ronald, Curtis and Dennis, all of Hawarden; his mother, Mrs. Tillie Bronkhorst of Orange City; three sisters, Mrs. Geurt {Willy) Leeuwis of Holland, Mrs. Henry (Toni) Vande Stroet of Rock Valley and Mrs. Ken (Henrietta) Van Gelder of Ireton.
