Services held for pioneer, Mrs. B. Docter
Funeral services were held in the First Reformed church of Orange City Tuesday, April 8, for Mrs. Ben Docter, a pioneer resident of Orange City.
Rev. Henry Colcnbrander officiated at the services. Van Etten funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Docter died in Oklahoma City, Okla., April 4, at the home of her daughter, at the age of 90 years, two months and six days.
Jane Vande Waa was born in Pella, Iowa, on January 25, 1868, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Vande Waa, and at the age of two years came with her parents in a covered wagon to the new colony in Orange City. Her father was one of the original four men who settled here.
In 1887 she was married to Ben Docter. Her husband died after 59 years of married life and she moved to Oklahoma City to live with two daughters.
Survivors include two daughters, (Alice) Mrs. Richard Krueger and (Hattie) Mrs. Oswald Jones, both of Oklahoma City; one son, Arthur, of Orange City; 15 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Cora Ver Steeg of Ashton, Mrs. George Haverkamp of Orange City and Mrs. Guy Vanden Burg of Sioux City; one brother, Benjamin Vande Waa of Orange City; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. H. J. Vande Waa of Orange City and Mrs. G. J. Vande Waa of Hull.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one daughter (Gertie) Mrs. George Thomasen who died in April, 1946, in California; one son-in-law, Oswald Jones; a sister, Mrs. Kate Engelsman of Holland, Mich.; and two brothers, Gerrit Vande Waa and Dr. Henry Vande Waa.
