L.C. Vander Esch
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church for L. C. Vander Esch, who passed away at his home in Hawarden, Wednesday, February 6, following a lingering illness.
Services, which were held at 12:45 p.m. at the home and 1:30 p.m. at the church, were conducted by Rev. Bert Vanden Brink of Hawarden, assisted by Rev. R. Venema of Sioux Center.
Interment was made in the Lebanon cemetery under the direction of Barnard Funeral Home.
Special music was furnished by Mr. Pete Daale and Gerrit Coulander, who sang a Dutch Psalm. A duet, entitled, "We are Going Down the Valley One by One," was sung by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bonnema. Miss Maxine Dekkers presided at the organ.
Six nephews of Mr. Vander Esch were pallbearers. They were: Adrian Haverhals, S.P. Haverhals, Severt A. Haverhals, Mitchell Van Berkel, Siebert Van Berkel and Peter Haverhals.
Leendert C. Vander Esch was born in The Netherlands April 1,1877, and had reached the age of 79 years, 10 months and 5 days. He was the last survivor of his family.
He came to America in 1914, settling in Garfield township.The following year he was united in marriage to Maria Haverhals and since then farmed in the Hawarden and Ireton vicinity. In 1945 he retired from active farming and moved to Hawarden where he lived until the time of his death.
Survivors include his widow; three sons, Leonard, Henry, and Severt Vander Esch; two daughters, Mrs. Ernest Van Driessen, and Mrs. Joe Dekkers; and 19 grandchildren. One son and one daughter preceded him in death.
