Alton Democrat of Feb 4, 1905
At four-thirty o'clock Tuesday morning at the home of her brother John P. Steichen four miles southeast of town. Miss Catharine Steichen passed away to a better world after a long sickness of many years.
Deceased was born in Luxemburg August twenty-nine 1839. She came to this country at an early age and
made her home with her brother. She was one of the first Catholic settlers of this vicinity. For many years she was weak minded—her sickness increasing with age so that for the last few years she was a great burden to her relatives who cared for her with great tenderness. It was
certainly a relief for her friends when God took her to himself. The funeral was held from St. Mary's church Thursday morning at teit o'clock and in spite of the extremely cold weather was largely attended. She leaves besides her brother a sister Mrs. P. Frantzen.
