Dies Suddenly From Heart Trouble.

The community was shocked when it became known last Thursday noon that Jasper DeRaad, living on the D. R. Stewart farm, three miles west of town, had passed away suddenly, just a little before the noon hour. Mr. DeRaad had been in his usual good health that morning and after breakfast he went over to the Emil Johnson farm after a number of articles which he had purchased at the sale. He returned home feeling as well as ever and when he came into the house, his wife remarked about getting dinner ready and Mr. DeRaad told her not to prepare much as he was not very hungry. These were his last words, spoken while in the act of putting on overalls. He passed beyond almost immediately from heart failure. The shock to his wife and daughter, who were present, was a severe one and as they conveyed the news of their sad loss over the phone their relatives and neighbors could hardly reconcile themselves to the truth.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon with Rev. J. Webinga, pastor of the First Reformed church, in charge, preaching in both the Holland and English language. The sermon was very touching and effective. The church was filled with many relatives, friends and neighbors. Interment was made in the Ireton cemetery.

Jasper DeRaad was born at Pella, Iowa, Sept. 17, 1869, and died Jan. 19, 1928, at the age of 58 years, 4 months and 2 days. When a child he came to Sioux county with his parents and with the exception of a few years he made Sioux County his home. He spent the years when out of Sioux county in South Dakota and Minnesota.

In 1894 he was united in marriage with Hattie Muilenburg, who passed away April 1904. To this union were born three children, Ira J. and Albert of Ireton and Mrs. Gertrude Vande Brake of Edgerton, Minn. In May, 1910, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Minnie Van Groni[*n]gen and one daugther, Jessie, was born to this union. She lives at home. Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his passing eight step-children, Mrs. Clara Vyhof and Mrs. Rena DeRaad of Ireton; Mrs. Nellie Hop and Mrs. Bertha Hop of Maurice; Mrs. Maggie Schuil of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Mrs. Anna Sluis, Mrs. Minnie DeBoer and Richard Van Gronigen of Sioux Falls. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. H. Naberhuis of Sioux Center and five brothers, Arie of Greenbush, Minn.; Albert, Will and Henry of Ireton; and John of LeMars. Two brothers, Neal and Marinus, preceded him in death.

In the death of this man the community has lost an honest and upright citizen, a good neighbor, a man who was plain in hia ways but had hose qualities which made him a splendid husband and as a father was always looking for the best interests of his children. Being brought up in a Christian atmosphere he lived those principles, loved and respected by all.
