Sioux Center News, March 15, 1989

Jake H. Vande Griend, 86, of Hull died Thursday, March 9 in Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley.

Services were held on Saturday in First Christian Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. William Renkema officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery under direction of the Kraai-Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Mr. Vande Griend was born Nov. 14, 1902, in Leota, MN, and was raised in the Middleburg area in Sioux County. On Feb. 17, 1926, he married Anna Zwagerman at Orange City. The couple farmed at Hull, Hospers and Boyden, retiring in 1967. In 1977 they moved into Hull. Mrs. Vande Griend died Dec. 4, 1983 in Sheldon. In November of 1988 he became a resident of Valley Manor.

Mr. Vande Griend was a member of First Christian Reformed Church where he had served on the Consistory as a deacon. He also served on the board of directors of the Hull Christian Elementary School for many years.

Survivors include a son, Irwin of Edgerton, MN; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard and Joyce of Doon, and Edward & Lena Ann of Sheldon; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Tony Jansma of Inwood; three brothers, Floyd, Andrew and Henry James, all of Hull; a sister, Ms. Henry (Carrie) DeRoo of Brooten, MN; 20 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Ivan; two daughters-in-law, Irene and Angeline; and two sisters, Kathryn Raman and Nellie Velgersdyk.
