IRETON - Mrs. P. Katje.

Mrs. Peter Katje well known Ireton woman died at her home in the southeast part of Ireton at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Katje had just completed their evening meal and were resting while Mr. Katje was reading the news to his wife. After an interval, Mrs. Katje remarked she would wash the dishes and went to the kitchen.
A few moments later Mr. Katje observed that his wife had fallen and upon reaching her, he found she had breathed her last.

While Mrs. Katje was not in robust health the past months, she was about her usual tasks and had been out in the yard about her home Tuesday throughout the day.

Mrs. Peter Waalkens Katje was born in the Netherlands Dec. 3, 1866 and was married in Holland to Lemko Waalkens upon reaching young womanhood. They were the parents of nine children, two of whom preceded their mother in death. Mrs. Katje came to the United States with her husband, Lemko Waalkens, and their five young children and settled first at Leota, Minn.

Later they lived at Davis, S. D., Bemis, S. D. and Goodwin, S. D. where Mr. Waalkens died leaving the young widow with seven children all of whom survive their mother. They are Mrs. H. J. Ruben, Polk City, la.; Otto Waalkens, Mrs. George Goems of Bemis, S. D.; Jake Waalkens of Parker, S. D.; Stewart Waalkens, Goodwin, S. D.. Hugo Waalkens, Bemis, S. D.; Mrs. Art Webb, Watertown, S. D.

On Oct. 14, fourteen years ago Mrs. Waalkens was married to Peter Katje, who survives her. The couple have made Ireton their home since that time.

Besides the children the following stepchildren survive: Mrs. Hannes De Groot, Maurice; Mrs. Sip Eisma and Mrs. Chas Westra, both of Ireton. There are 24 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. Mrs Katje was a woman of a fine Christian character, whose first interest lay in her church, her family and her home. During her residence here she has made many friends. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m at the home and 2 o'clock at the Christian Reformed church at Ireton. Rev. H. R. Van Dyke was in charge.
