Death Follows Long Illness.

The death angel again visited one of the homes in Ireton Monday. This time it laid its hand on the form of Mrs. Peter Katje, who had so patiently suffered the ravages of the dread disease, cancer. Although it was known hat her condition was serious, yet her beloved ones and friends hardly realized that the end was so near. Mrs. Katje was one of the wives and mothers who was devoted to her home and loved ones, living a beautiful life of faith and hope, believing and trusting to the past. Christianity to her was real and vital. Goodness to her meant more than words and many have known her touch here and there in kind deeds and helpfulness.

Mrs. Peter Katje, nee Sadie Lanting, was born in the Netherlands Oct. 7, 1860, and died at her home in Ireton June 16, 1930, at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 9 days. At an early age she with her mother and two brothers, all who were left of the family of five children, came to Little Falls, N.J., where the youngest brother died shortly after their settlement there. There she was united in marriage with Peter Katje, a widower with two children.

Soon after their marriage they moved to Dunee Lake, now called East Patterson. They lived there until 21 years ago when they came west. One child was born to this union, Ida, now Mrs. Chas. Westra. They located on a farm northeast of Ireton where they resided until 10 years ago when they moved to Ireton and she made her home here continuously since that time. A year ago a small lump formed on her side. It was removed by means of an operation but this seemed to spread the disease all the more. The last two weeks she was bedfast, failing rapidly, suffering much, especially was this true the last day of her life. All that loving hands could do in caring and alleviating her suffering was done but death came as a final relief. She was ready to change this life for that home over yonder prepared for those who have placed their trust in the Savior, whom she loved so much and served from childhood. A loving mother and wife are gone, whose place can never be filled but fond memories of her will be cherished and the sad good-bye will some day turn to a good morning when all loved ones meet again.

Those left to mour her departure are her husband, who has traveled with her down the pathway of life for 32½ years, one daughter Ida, and two stepdaughters, Mrs. John DeGroot and Mrs. Sip Eisma, and also 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the home at 12:30 Wednesday afternoon and from the Christian Reformed church at 1:00 p. m., with Rev. Van Dyke in charge. Burial was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
