OBITUARY OF MRS. WALTER VAN DYKE

Mrs. W. Van Dyke was born at Ackley, Iowa, on Jan. 14, 1883 where she lived with her parents for 17 years. Then she moved to a farm near Boyden, Iowa. In 1905 she was united in marriage with Walter Van Dyke and they settled on a farm near Hull where they lived for 16 years. In 1921 they moved to the town of Hull and in 1922 her husband bought the Bee Hive. He was in business for 23-1/2 years. In 1946 Mr. Van Dyke sold his business and they moved to California.

Mrs. Van Dyke suffered with arthritis for 12 years but was a patient sufferer and was quite well in California. A week before her death she suffered from an ear infection which caused her death on June 30. She leaves to mourn her husband and nine children: Mrs. R. Prince (Dora); Mrs. H. Wolfswinkle (Katie); Mrs. H. Roelofs (Nellie); Mr. Cornie Van Dyke; Mrs. Fred Kuperus (Jeanette); Mrs. P. Verrips (Johanna); Mrs. W. Van Veldhuizen (Wilhelmina), Mrs. Tim Roetman (Adrianna), Mrs. E. Bossenbroek (Elizabeth). Her son Andrew preceded her in death in 1909. She also leaves behind 20 grandchildren.

The surname is actually spelled Van Dyk. It appears as such in the obituaries of her husband (Sioux Center News, June 7, 1962; Sioux County Index, May 31, 1962) and her daughter Adriana Roetman (Sioux Center News, Dec. 19, 1995, which also gives her mother's name, Katie (Schaap) Van Dyk). There is a Sioux County Cemetery Index entry for her as Kate Van Dyk, 1883-1949, ss Walter.

The 1930 census has Walter Van Dyk (age 50), general store proprietor, Hull, with wife Kate (47) and children Katie (22), Nellie (20), Cornie (18), Jeanette (17), Johanna (15), Wilma (14), Adriana (11), and Elizabeth (8).
