Boyden Airman Killed in Air force Accident.
Military honors with an aerial screen at graveside rites will be paid to Lt. Howard S. Salie, 27, of Boyden, who was killed in an air collision in Arizona Thursday, when funeral services are held at Boyden Friday, June 6, at 2:00 p.m. The funeral services will be held at the United Presbyterian church with Rev. H. P. Baak officiating.

Lt. Salie had been an instructor in the 3525th pilot training wing since he graduated at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., in 1950. His wife and child live at Chandler, Ariz. Lt. Salie had been on a training flight with Cadet Edward M Stephens, 23, El Cerrito, Calif., when his plane hit the tail of another training plane, carrying Capt. Wm. B. Canning of Wayne, Neb., and Capt. Clifford A. Wilson of Corpus Christi. Lt. Salie's plane crashed and the other trainer hobbled back to the base, bringing in its two occupants safely. Both planes were T-6 trainer crafts. Cadet Stephens also was killed. The body was scheduled to arrive in Sheldon at Vander Ploeg Funeral home Tuesday with Capt. John C. Earth as the escort.

Lt. Salie's survivors include his widow, the former Darlene Swenson, formerly of Sheldon, the daughter of Mrs. Arie Wildeman; and one daughter, Sharon, one and a half years old. Other survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Neal Salie of Boyden, two sisters, Mrs. Charles Bellema, Plainview, Neb.; three uncles, Datus Salie and William and Al Dykema of Worthington; and four aunts, Mrs. Leonard Klein and Nick Kooiker, Boyden, Peter S. Westra and Jim Mormon, of Sheldon.

OBITUARY - Howard William Salie.
Howard William Salie was born January 20, 1925, at Boyden, Iowa, and passed away May 29, 1952, near Coolidge, Arizona He had attained the age of twenty-seven years, four months, and ten days. He grew to manhood in the Boyden vicinity and graduated from Boyden High School in 1942. He was a baptized member of the United Presbyterian Church at Boyden. He entered the service April 1, 1943, and served with the 8th Air Force for nearly three and-a-half yrs. After his discharge he received his transport and multi-motor plot's Keener and was a flight instructor at Storm Lake for one year. On September 29, 1947, he was united in marriage to Darlene Swenson, the daughter of Mrs. A. Wildman of Sheldon. To this union one daughter, Sharon Kaye, was born. He entered cadet training at Randolph Field, Texas, on Jan. 1, 1950, and was graduated at Willliams Air Base, Chandler, Arizona, December 16, 1951. After receiving officer’s training at Selby, Alabama, he became a jet plane instructor at Williams Air Force Base. At the time of his death he was the senior pilot of the 35-25th training wing, his duty consisting of instructing cadets who might otherwise have been "washed out." Had he lived he would have received his 1st. Lt. rating on June 15. Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian Church, Friday, June 6, with Reverend H. Baak in charge. Mrs. A. Doorenbos and Mr. Steve Vanden Brink sang "God Leads His Dear Children Along," and Mrs. Leonard Rensink sang "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone." Full military honors were accorded him by the Boyden and Sheldon Legion posts. Three P51 fighter planes from the Sioux City Air base flew the final "Fly-Bye"
over the grave.
