Theodore Smits.
Theodore Smits, 96, of Maurice died Wednesday, May 2, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. Services were Saturday, May 5, at 10:30 a.m. at First Reformed Church in Maurice with the Rev. Wayne Sneller officiating. Burial was at Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice.

Smits was born November 27, 1904, in rural Maurice, the son of John and Gerdena (Meylink) Smits. He was raised in Maurice. He married Anna De Jong on January 31, 1929, in Maurice. The couple farmed in Ireton and later in Maurice. In 1956, they moved into Maurice where he was employed as a carpenter. She died December 23, 1990, in Sioux Center. He entered Pleasant Acres
Care Center in Hull in January 2000. He was a member of First Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as an elder. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Nibbelink of Sioux Center; a son and his wife, Theodore Jr. and Mary of Shakopee, Minnesota; a son-in-law, Jim Klein of Jasper, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Karleen Smits of Sioux Center; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sue Jongbloed of Clark, South Dakota, and Elsie Medsker of Yorba Linda, California; a brother and his wife, Marvin and Norma of St. Paul, Minnesota; and two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Smits of Worthington, Minnesota, and Caroline Smits of Orange City. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine Klein; two sons, John and Thomas in infancy; a son-in-law, Henry Nibbelink; two infant grandchildren; three brothers, Arie and his wife Dora, Dick and William "Smokey;" four sisters, Dora and her husband Dick Haarsma, Jennie and her husband Walt Schreur, Esther Smits, and Johanna and her husband John Ruisch; and a brother-in-law, Bill Jongbloed. Memorials may be directed to the building fund of First Reformed Church of Maurice.
