John Sas
February 26, 1917 - April 22, 2013

Mr. John Sas, age 96, of Hull, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013, at the Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 27, at 10:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Kevin Yurk will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

John was born on February 26, 1917, in rural Hudson, South Dakota, the son of John and Jessie (Siemonsma) Sas. He was raised near Hudson, Newkirk, and Hull and attended the country school in Newkirk.

John served in the United States Army during World War II. He was part of the 2472nd Quartermaster Company, serving in India, Burma and China for 3 ˝ years.

On January 21, 1947, he married Gertrude Clazena Vande Garde in Sioux Center. They farmed northeast of Hull and did custom farming until 1980, when they moved into Hull. The Sas family also operated the Boyden Drive-In for four years. Gertrude passed away in July of 2006.

John was a member of the First Reformed Church and the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed flying his airplane. After retirement, he enjoyed fishing and camping with his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed reading and spending time tinkering in his basement, trying to fix anything he could.

Survivors include his son and his wife, Dwight and Marla Sas, of Hull, a daughter and her husband, Leanne and Verlyn Moen, of Marion; six grandchildren, Michael Sas, and his wife, Heather, Kevin Sas, and his fiancé, Brianna Perez, Angie Sas, Andrew Moen, Mark Moen, and Kasey Moen.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Leland Dale Sas, and a sister, Elvina Sas.
