Hawarden Independent, May 2, 1946

Mrs. N. O. Ward, 87, a resident of this community for almost a half a century, passed away at the S. R. McAninch home for the aged, Wednesday morning. Mrs. Ward had been an invalid for the past four or five years.

Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church in Hawarden at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, with Rev. J. H. Flaming in charge. Interment will be at the Big Springs church cemetery.

Agnes Bell was born in Belfast, Ireland, November 18, 1858. She came to America when 35 years of age and located at Detroit, Mich. She was married to Nels Ward at Big Springs on November 20, 1897. They resided at Big Springs two years following her marriage and then moved onto their own farm three miles southwest of Hawarden. In 1926 she came to Hawarden to live and then spent one year at El Campo, Texas, seeking help for her husband's illness. Mr. Ward died June 25, 1928.

Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Ward lived alone until about four years ago, when she entered the McAninch home. In July, 1945, she submitted to an amputation of her left leg below the knee. Due to advanced years, she did not recover satisfactorily from the ordeal. She was a member of the Baptist church and the women of this organization, as well as Mrs. McAninch, did much to help her in her illness during the past year.

She was the last member of her family and besides her adopted son, Clarence Ward, of Detroit, Mich. she had no close relatives.
