Hawarden Independent of April 28, 1904

The entire community of Hawarden was saddened last Thursday morning by the sudden death of Olive E. Hitchcock, only child and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hitchcock, one of the most
esteemed families of this city.

Olive complained of feeling ill on Monday evening and was confined to her bed Tuesday afternoon. Medical aid was called, but all that could be done by parents and friends was futile. She became unconscious and gradually grew worse, suffering much until relieved by death Thursday at 11:30 a m. Her death was caused by congestion of the brain.

She was born in Hawarden, May 8, 1888, making her age at the time of her death nearly sixteen
years. She was a girl of noble character and lived a short but exemplary life. She united
with the Methodist Episcopal church in early childhood and her place in the services of the church was seldom vacant. There were two traits happily blended together in her life: modesty and kindness.

For three years she made weekly visits to the bedside of an invalid man to read to him and so
to break the monotony of his helplessness.

The funeral occurred at the M. E. church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, the pastor choosing for his text Matt. 6:28, “Consider the Lillies” About six hundred people were present at the funeral to show their last respects to the departed one, and their sympathies for the sorrowing parents.

The chancel rail of the church was appropriately decorated with choice flowers and the casket was
Laden with beautiful bouquets of roses and carnations. These tokens of condolence were presented to the family by the Schoeneman Bros of this city,. Rev. and Mrs. Geo. Kidder of Marcus, Iowa, a former pastor, the W. Cs T. U., the ladies of the church and the public school pupils of the 8th grade, of which the deceased as a classmate. The sincerest sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved parents.
