Floyd R. VanderMeer, 81, a Battle Creek, Mich. history teacher for 40 years, died Tuesday in Grand Rapids. Mr. & Mrs. VanderMeer were residents of Battle Creek, Mich, for 56 years. They moved to Grand Rapids, Mich. on March 18, to the M. J. Clark Retirement and Nursing Home where Mr. VanderMeer was admitted to Manor Nursing because of failing health.

Mr. VanderMeer was born in Alton. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Hope College and in 1929 his Master's degree from the University of Michigan. In the summer of 1946 he attended graduate courses at Columbia University.

He taught history in Battle Creek Central High School for 40 years and also taught three years in St. John's High School. In Battle Creek he was tennis coach for 10 years and was audio-visual coordinator for 25 years.

He was a member of several local and regional teacher organizations and was a member of the Michigan Education Association's board of directors.

A 54 year member of the First United Methodist Church, he was head usher and a member of the board of trustees and the Methodist Men.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Jane Welling; a daughter, Carol A. Bechtel of West Hartford, Conn.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. William VanderMeer of Fresno, Calif., and three grandchildren.

Services were held Friday in the Farley-Estes Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to Hope College.
