Alton Democrat of Jun 4, 1904

James Merrill a veteran of the civil war and one of the pioneers of Sioux County passed away at his lovely farm home adjoining Sheldon Tuesday evening. Mr. Merrill had been in poor health for a long time and it was only by force of an indomitable will and a once rugged constitution that he sruvived the winter. 'Jim' Merrill as he was familiarly called was on ot the few men of whom it can truthfull be said he never knowingly wronged any man and he leaves a host of friends who rejoice in the thought that his reward is waiting for thim on the other side of the great divide which separates the living from that land of eternal into which pain and sorrow and suffering never enter and where sorrow is unknown.

(In 1900 Grant tsp. Sioux County, Merrill was born 1844 New York, wife Ophelia D. Merrill born Sep 1856 Indiana, married 1883, they had one son in that census James age 20.
Information from his pension fund he was in K96 NY Inf. 6118 NY Inf.)
