After an illness lasting several months Mr. Johannes H. Smidt passed away at his home near the Christian Reformed church last Thursday at the advanced age of seventy years. Mr. Smidt was born in the Netherlands in 1837 and came to this country many years ago. He lived for several years on his farm near Boyden and about four years ago moved to this city. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Christian Reformed church of which he was a member. The services were conducted by Rev. Timmerman, the pastor of the church.

Johannes Hummelen Smidt was born 27 March 1838 Diever Netherlands. The son of Seime Smidt and Aaltje Piers Hessels. He married Geertruida Pot 30 Apr 1862 and they had two children before she died, Margje and Sieme. Then he married Geesje Thijs 16 Mar 1868 and they had at least two children Jan and Aaltje.)
