Sioux Center News of Dec 27, 1934
Hitjo ‘Joe’ Vander Veen passed away Tuesday night, Dec. 18, after being ill for some time. He was born in the Netherlands sixty-eight years ago last September 19. He came to this country in 1890 and except for a few years in Kansas his home has been in or near Sioux Center ever since that date.

Mr. Vander Veen was a hog buyer for several years before his marriage in 1910 at which time he went to the farm. Thirteen years ago he moved from the farm to his property just south of town where he engaged in gardening and truck farming.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Gertrude, and five brothers. They are Bruno of Kalamazoo MI, Zwier of the Netherlands; Jake of Almina KS; John of Kalamazoo, and Auko of Sioux Center. Jake Vander Veen and his son James were the only ones able to attend the funeral.
Funeral services were held Friday at the home and at the Second Chr. Ref. Church, Rev. L. Ypma officiating. Interment was in the local cemetery.
