Mrs. Etta Vander Zwaag age 88, of Orange City, passed away Tuesday January 6, at the Heritage House nursing Home in Orange City. There was a funeral service on Friday, January 9, at Etta Vander Zwaag 10:00am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Lizbeth Moss will officiated Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation was after 2:00pm Thursday with the family present from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City
Etta was born June 9, 1915, in rural Orange City the daughter of Gerrit and Clara De Vries Terhorst. She graduated from the Orange City Christain School. On November 25, 1937, she married Henry B. Vander Zwaag at Orange City. They lived most of their married life near Newkirk, where they farmed and she was a homemaker. In 1978, they retired into Orange City. Mr. Vander Zwaag passed away March 26, 1993, in Jensen Beach, Florida.
In May of 2000, Mrs. Vander Zwaag became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. In August of 2003, she transferred to the Heritage House.
She was a member of the American Reformed Church in Orange City, where she belonged to the Ruth Circle. Etta enjoyed crocheting, needlepointing, and quilting. She was known for her beautiful flower gardens and for being an excellent photographer. She also compiled extensive genealogical recordsfor the Ter Horst and Vander Zwaag families. The residents of Landsmeer Ridge and the Heritage House appreciated her ability to play hymns on the piano "by ear".Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Kathleen and James Dekker, of Sioux City; a son, Dr. Benjamin Vander Zwaag, of Kelseyville, California; five grandchildren, Krista and her husband Dennis Hilburn, Daniel Dekker, and Sarah and her husband Chuck Keleher, all of Sioux City; Kari Vander Zwaag, of Sacramento, California; and Craig Vander Zwaag, of Arroyo Grande, California; four greatgrandchildren, Kaitlynn and Michele Hilburn and Ashley and Garrett Dekker; a sister, Clareen Vanden Berg, of New Jersey; and a brother-in-law, Wein Vander Zwaag, of Orange City. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bert and Bill Ter Horst; and five sisters, Minnie Ter Horst, Arta Gesink, Bertha Bruxvoort, Johanna Sandbulte, and Leo Heynen. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or Hope Haven Wheelchair Ministry.
