Richard Cody Riggan 80, of Orange City, died Tuesday February 21, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital. A memorial service was Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at American Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Keith Krebs officiating. The remains have been donated to the University of Iowa Medical School.

Riggan was born on October 4, 1925, at Altoona, the son of Vernice and Sarah (Simons) Riggan. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, serving in Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. Following his di discharge, he graduated from the Des Moines Technical High School and Drake University in Des Moines. He then served an additional year in the Marine Corps, during the Korean Conflict.

On July 8, 1956, he married Nancy Lou Olson at Bode. Later, he earned two masters of arts degrees from the University of South Dakota. He was a teacher of English and speech in high schools in Fenton, Clarion, Madrid, Pocahontas and Orange City. In more recent years, he was a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, until
retirement.

He was a member of the American Reformed Church. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, telling stories of-his life. His special joy was woodworking in the shop his children designed and built for him.

Survivors include his wife of more than 49 years; four children and their spouses, Kelly and Tim Hinderks, Tracy and Nancy Riggan, Derek and Karen Riggan and Tara and Brett Handy; and 12 grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
