Daryl was the son of Marion John Ter Horst and Carrie Doppenberg Ter Horst.He graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City and attended Fullerton College in Fullerton, California. He continued to live in California, where he was employed by the Sweetheart Paper Company for several years. In November of 1988, he moved to Chicago, where he became a counselor at the Jenny Craig Diet Center.

Survivors include his mother, Carrie Ter Horst, of Orange City; sister, Mrs. Dwaine (Janice) Vander Vegte, of Orange City; two nephews, Travis and Jonathan; and two nieces, Carissa and Brittany.He was preceded in death by his father.
