Mathida Ter Horst
Mrs. Matilda Ter Horst, age 87, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2007, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.There will be a funeral service on Monday, October 8, at 1:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Ter Beest will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Matilda Viola was born on July 11, 1920, at Granville, the daughter of Andrew and Minnie (Mouw) Plender. She was raised on a farm near Granville, where she attended a country school.
In December of 1946, she married Arie Bloemendaal in Orange City. They farmed two miles north of Alton, where she was a homemaker. In January of 1967, they moved into Orange City. Arie passed away on September 7, 1967, in Iowa City.In December of 1972, "Til" married William John Ter Horst in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where she was a dishwasher at the Pantry Café and she did wallpaper hanging. "Bill" passed away on March 7, 1987, in Orange City.
Later, she became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In August of 2005, she transferred to the Long Term Care Facility.
Mrs. Ter Horst was a member of the First Reformed Church. In earlier years, she belonged to the Second (Calvary) Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. She enjoyed playing cards, especially canasta, eating out, and baking.Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Connie and Alden Menning, of Orange City; Larry and Alice Bloemendaal, of Alton; Barbara and Elwin Top, of Orange City; and Ardis and Brad Van Rooyen, of Eldridge; four step-children, Art Ter Horst, and his wife, Lorna, of Orange City; Margene, and her husband, Bill Van Zanten, and Geri Kraai, all of Rock Valley; and Stan and Dorothy Ter Horst, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; thirteen grandchildren, thirteen step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Faber and Ruth Vander Maaten, both of Orange City; and a sister-in-law, Arta Plender, of Orange City.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Elsie Bloemendaal; a step-son-in-law, Don Kraai; two grandchildren, Lisa Bloemendaal and Daniel Van Rooyen; four sisters, Margaret De Haan, Wilhelmina Muilenburg, Henrietta Ter Horst, and Arabella Kleinhesselink; two brothers, John and Henry Plender; and two sisters-in-law, Eva Oordt and Harriet Rens.
