Dies at Seventy

John Vander Meulen, 70, died unexpectedly at his home Tuesday afternoon at 12:15. He had not been ill but had said that he felt as though he might be getting the flu and that he would stay in bed that morning. After 11 a.m. he had a little lunch and then went back to bed. When Mrs. Vander Meulen went into the bedroom a little later he was gasping for breath and he died without a word. Dr. Zellenga arrived within a matter of minutes after being called but nothing could be done.

John Vander Meulen was born in the Netherlands, April 15, 1880 and came to the United States when nine years old. The family settled on a farm northwest of Orange City where he grew to manhood. In 1907, he was united in marriage to Nellie Kuiken. They farmed in the Sioux Center and Orange City vicinity until 1944 when they retired and moved to Orange City.

He is survived by his widow and two children, Raymond of Orange City and Gladys, Mrs. Ray Smeenk of Harrisburg, S.D. There are also five grandchildren, four brothers, Gerrit and Ed of Ocheyedan, Nick of Rock Valley, Ray of Chicago, and two sisters, Mrs. John Freriks of Cherokee and Mrs. Peter Noteboom of Orange City. A brother, Fred, preceded him in death in 1930.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 5 at one o'clock in the home and at 1:30 in the First Christian Reformed church with Rev. R. Bronkema officiating. Burial will be in the local cemetery with the Van Etten Funeral Service in charge.
