Vortherms, Anna, Mrs. Frank, 1891-1989

VORTHERMS, WILWERT, DISBURT, KASCHMITTER

Anna K. Vortherms, age 98, of Alton, passed away Sunday, Dec. 3 at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

Anna was born Aug. 30, 1891 at Granville, the daughter of Philip Wilwert and Magdalen Disburt Wilwert. At the age of one, her family moved to Hospers where she was educated. On Sept. 9, 1912, she married John Kaschmitter at Alton. In 1913 they homesteaded at Sumatra, Mont. In 1918 they returned to Alton and she established a chicken hatchery in 1920. Mr. Kaschmitter passed away July 30, 1940 at Alton.

She continued operating the hatchery until 1946 when she became employed in a cafe. On Nov. 27, 1951 she married Frank Vortherms at Laurens. They lived at Alton where he passed away Sept. 26, 1966. In 1985 Mrs. Vortherms became a resident of the Orange City Municipal Hospital and in 1986 she transferred to the Heritage House. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Alton.

Survivors include her two sons, Odilo Kaschmitter and his wife Marie of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Leonard Kaschmitter and his wife Gay of Overland, Mo.; son-in-law Robert McDonald of Mission, Kan.; three step-sons, Ernest Vortherms of Hospers, Sylvester Vortherms of Adrian, Minn., and Leo Vortherms of Westbrook, Minn.; three step-daughters, Mrs. Walt (Evelyn) Slinger of Woodstock, Minn., Mrs. Ed (Isabel) Hemmen of Worthington, Minn., and Mrs. Anton (Johanna) Klein of Reading, Minn.; two step-daughters-in-law, Mrs. Arnold (Rosella) Vortherms of Hospers and Mrs. George (Mildred) Vortherms of Fulda, Minn.; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by her daughter, Vera McDonald, two brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 6 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. Monsignor Nicholas J. Ruba officiating. Interment followed at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
