John Ralph De Weerd, 83, of rural Rock Valley died Wednesday, October 12, at Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, with the Rev. Stephen Rhoda officiating. Interment was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center.

De Weerd was born February 18, 1922, to Bert and Hattie (Van Holland) De Weerd near Rock Valley. During his formative years his family lived on various farms in Sioux County. After completing the eighth grade he left school to help with the family farm. On his 26th birthday he married Anna Draayer in Sioux Center. They made their home on a farm south of Rock Valley. This home has remained their residence for all of these years.

He was a longtime member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church and served as a deacon and elder. Christian education was important to him, having sat on the school board of both Sioux Center Christian School and Western Christian
High School. Farming was always a vital part of his life and he still liked helping out when, he could, particularly during the harvest season. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ann; his children, Delores and Lawrence an Grootheest of Rock Valley, Ron and Joy De Weerd of Rock Valley, Leanne De Weerd of Waterford, Wisconsin, Glen De Weerd of Rock Valley, Mark and Sherry De Weerd of Springfield, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Gladys De Weerd of Sioux Center; sisters-inlaw, Anna De Weerd of Pella, Nellie Altena of Sioux Center and Helen De Weerd of Sioux Center. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dick, Hilbert and Gordon; and a granddaughter. The De Weerd Family prefers
