Gilbert F. Herrig, 68, of Alton died unexpectedly Monday at his home in Alton. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Monsignor Nicholas Ruba will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by Floyd Post 200, American Legion. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge.
Mr. Herrig was born Jan. 8, 1919 in Alton. He was raised and educated in the Alton area. He did corn shelling and custom grinding. In 1964 he became custodian of St. Mary's Parish, retiring in 1983. Mr. Herrig served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion of Alton and Granville VFW Post 5347.
Survivors include two brothers, Edmund and Ervin, both of Alton and a sister, Mrs. Leo (Calestine) Krogman of Ashton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Catherine Ambrosy) Herrig, one brother, Clarence, and one sister, Mrs. Nick (Angeline) Plathe.
