Mr. Albert De Haan, age 89, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, August 27, 2012, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 1, at 2:00pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Vande Zande will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Saturday, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Albert Milo was born on September 19, 1922, in rural Orange City, the son of Henry A. B. and Cornelia (Van Zyl) De Haan. He was raised on a farm northwest of Orange City, where he attended the public school, graduating from high school.
In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army, but was honorably discharged in July of 1943, due to a family medical emergency. In December of 1943, he enlisted in the Navy, serving until April of 1946.
On June 18, 1947, he married Jennie Kroeze at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where he owned and operated Al’s Floor Covering. In 2006, they moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. "Jackie" passed away on April 26, 2011, in Orange City.
"Al" was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon. He also belonged to the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post and was a former member of the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce, all in Orange City.
He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, and vacationing with his family. In later years, he took up woodworking and liked watching his grandchildren’s activities.
In retirement, Mr. and Mrs. De Haan dedicated their time to serving others, through organizations such as Christian Reformed World Relief, the Sioux City Gospel Mission, Habitat for Humanity, and Justice for All. Through this service, they developed friendships around the country.
Survivors include his four children and their spouses, Connie and Bruce Lefever, Linda and Marvin Toering, Sr, and Dennis and Deb De Haan, all of Orange City; and Alan and Ellen De Haan, of Cambridge, Massachusetts; thirteen grandchildren, Ross (Stef) Lefever, Ryan (Amanda) Lefever, Jill (Brian) Van Bruggen, Joy (Luke) Taylor, Marvin (Katie) Toering, Jr., Miranda (Brandon) Reisma, Michael (Cayla) Toering, Tabatha (Anthony) De Haan, Mark Toering, Isaac Toering, Jessica (Michael) Kiss, Michelle (Jordan) Warntjes, and Josef De Haan; eighteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Nitz, of Toledo, Iowa; and a brother and his wife, Stanley and Phyllis De Haan and a sister-in-law, Carolyn De Haan, all of Orange City.
He is also survived by Jennie’s family, two sisters, Matilda Newendorp, of Sioux Center; and Elizabeth Vande Berg, of Prescott, Arizona; two sisters-in-law, Marcene Kroeze and Marilyn Kroeze, both of Orange City; and a brother-in-law, Marion Wiersma, of Sioux Center.
n In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Ruth and Arie Drost; a brother, Wallace De Haan; and a brother-in-law, Howard Nitz.
