Mrs. Ellen Lein, 80 who for many years lived in the Hawarden vicinity, died last Wednesday night at the Panska Nursing home following a heart attack.
Ellen Mathre was born at Lisbon IL. January 4, 1873. Later she moved with her family to Emmet county IA where she married A. E. Toft at Estherville December 15, 1891. Eight children were born to this union. One son Knute preceded her in death.
In 1894 the family moved to Sioux County and lived on a farm seven miles northeast of Hawarden in Eagle township. Her husband died April 12, 1922. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and for many years was a member of the Rock River Lutheran church in Eagle township.
After the death of Mr. Toft she married Lars Lein of Huxley IA, and lived there until his death Jan 23, 1952. She then moved to Hudson and then to Hawarden.
Survivors are seven children, Mrs. Fred Yumber of Rock Valley, Elmer toft and Mrs. Belmore Benson of Jackson MN, Howard Toft of Hudson, Milton Toft of Alcester, Mrs. Oscar Twedt of Roland IA, and Mrs. Edward Olson of Porterville, CA; two sisters, Mrs. Henry Hemminson of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Louis Hoovel of Jaskson MN; two brothers, Oscar Mathre of Lily SD. And Clarence mathre, who lives in CA. 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and seven Lein step children. (listed in obit)
Funeral services were held at 2: o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Lutheran church in Hudson, Rev. Christopherson officiating Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery in Hawarden. (Pall bearers listed and a large number of people who attended from a distance)
