Obituary: Rock Valley, IA: Jacob "Jake" H. Van Voorst, 72, of rural Rock Valley, died at home of apparent heart attack, Thursday, August 23, 2012. Funeral Service will be 1:30 pm Tuesday at Carmel Reformed Church. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley..

Jake was born November 25, 1939 on a farm near Rock Valley, IA, son of Henry and Gertie (Fluit) Van Voorst. He attended country school thru 7th grade and Hull Public School in the 8th. Jake met his "Honey Bun", Carolyn "Carrie" Meerbeek, at Rock Valley CCR in 1957 and on September 14, 1959 the couple was united in marriage at First Reformed Church in Hull. Jake and Carrie rented a home in Carmel for 7 years until they moved 1¼ mile east of Carmel where they built a house in 1967. They lived there until 1978 when they built their current home Northwest of Rock Valley near Fairview, SD. Jake operated a custom grinding business in 1958 and owned it 1960-1968. After that, Jake worked as a trucker for various companies until his retirement in 2005. He trucked for Farmers Feed & Supply of Boyden, Ace Lines, Inc. of Des Moines, Umthon Trucking Company of Eagle Grove, and Decker Trucking Lines of Fort Dodge. Even after retirement he did part time seasonal trucking for Triple V Farms. Jake enjoyed traveling on his motorcycle, his one-time ship cruise, yardwork, and spending time with the grandkids.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Carrie; son, Jerry Jay (Karen) Van Voorst of Hudson, SD; daughters, Kathy Kay (DeWayne) Dykstra of Orange City, IA; Patsy Fay (Mark) Mulder of Orange City; Julie Ann (Glenn) Vande Vegte of Inwood, IA; Holly Mae (Arlen) Zomermaand of Inwood, IA; and Kelly Lyn (Dale) Robertson of Fairview, SD; 20 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Tunis (Jacqi) Van Voorst of Custer, SD, Clarence (Carol) Van Voorst of Hull, IA, Henry (Judy) Van Voorst of Sioux Falls, SD, Gerald (Joyce) Van Voorst of Sioux Falls, SD; sisters, Jeanette (John) Van Ginkel of Rock Valley, IA, Cynthia Amick of Jefferson City, MO, Mary (Harvey) Driesen of Rock Valley, IA, Joann Driesen of Sioux Center, IA, Ruth (Jake) Anker of Chilliwack, BC, sister-in-law, Shirley Van Voorst of Rock Valley, IA; Carries sister, Aggie (Larry) Hinken-Koerselman of George, IA; brothers, Allen and John Meerbeek both of Rock Valley, IA.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Gertie; grandson, Mitchell Aaron Mulder; brother, John Van Voorst; brothers-in-law, Harold Driesen, Herman Koerselman and Gary Amick; sister-in-law, Elvina Meerbeek parents-in-law, John and Hattie Meerbeek.
