Boy, 4, Dies At Hospital Shortly After Accident

Thomas Lee Dimmick, 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dimmick of Hawarden, died from internal injuries Friday [March 20] at the hospital here shortly after he darted into the path of an automobile while playing near his home at 1618 Avenue E.

Sheriff Harry Dykstra, who happened to be in Hawarden at the time of the accident, and Police Chief Walt Larson investigated. They reported that the accident was not the fault of the driver of the car, Dick Vreeman, who said he was traveling about 10 miles an hour. There was no inquest.

Mr. Larson said that the boy ran into the right front fender of the car which was traveling east on 17th street between Avenues E and F. The attending physician said that the boy suffered "very few, if any" bruises and attributed his death to internal injuries. Thomas was taken to the hospital by his mother and Mr. Vreeman. The accident occurred about 3:50 in the afternoon.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon with Rev. B. Roy Brown officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery. The Barnard Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Pall bearers were Larry Green, Jerry Van Muyden, Bobby Mollhoff and Ferrell Boyles.

Thomas was born May 31, 1948. He was a member of the Methodist church Sunday school. Survivors besides his parents are three brothers, James, Stanley and Raymond, and three grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson of Ireton and Curtis Dimmick of Hawarden. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby.
