From the Alton Democrat of August 9, 1902 Granville News
It is said that God loves to dwell amongst the lillies and indeed we realize this when he plucked our flower Simon Coffey. Mr. Coffey
died Tuesday August 5 at the home of his uncle and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Barry east of town. Mr. Coffey was only nineteen years of age but was held in the loving respect of all who knew him. His manly amiable traits endear him to us for all time. His illness though not very long was of the nature that seems to baffle all medical science that is bronchial trouble which resulted in consumption. The funeral took place Thursday morning at eight-thirty from the residence of Thos, Barry and thence to St.
Joseph's church where solemn high mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Stromberg pastor assisted by Rev. Father Gehling of Hospers and Rev. Father Gardner of South Dakota.
The nice funeral along with the different floral tributes are evidences of the great respect we hold for our departed Simon. Mr. Coffey spent
his early childhood years with his parents in Northampton Massachusetts.
In '91 the family moved west and since then both of his parents died in 1893, He leaves one brother (John Henry) and a Sister (Alice) along with a number of other relatives to mourn his death. To the relatives and friends we extend our
sympathy for we all knew and loved Simon,—Contributed.
(See the obits of this parents, John and Mary Coffey in the obits on our site. His mother Mary was either a Powers or a Barry as Thomas Barry and Catherine Powers were his uncle and aunt.)
