Mrs. Melody Bates, age 57, of Alton, Iowa, formerly of Pennsylvania, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

The remains are being cremated. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa.

Melody Norma was born on March 2, 1956, in Reading, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Richard E. and Norma J. (Feyl) Orth.

On June 19, 1971, she married Charles Mayberry George Bates in Oley, Pennsylvania. They made their home in Pennsylvania, where she was a cashier at a Giant Supermarket. In the fall of 2011, they moved to Alton.

She is survived by her husband of over 41 years, Charles; a daughter, Dawn Bates, and her fiancé, Jeffrey Weaver; a son and his wife, Charles and Tracey Aulenbach; and a grandson, Collin Bates, all of Alton; her mother, Norma Orth, of Reading; and a brother and his wife, Brian and Sonjia Orth, of Burrell, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her father.
