BENTON, HAMMOND

Monday three bodies that had been buried in the Worcester grave yard four miles south of town were taken up and re-interred in our cemetery. The bodies were those of Mr. Benton, Mr. Hammond and the wife of David Hammond. Mr. Benton was buried over forty years ago and David Hammond's father ten years or more, and his wife about twenty. David selected a beautiful lot where his near and dear ones will not be disturbed again. It certainly is not very often that bodies are dug up and re-buried after such a long time, as in the instance of Mr. Benton.

~Alton Democrat, May 25, 1918; "Ireton & Neighborhood" news column

~notes: WPA records show the burials of:

William O. Benton 1830-05/24/1874

Lizzie M. Hammond nee Benton, w/o David 1862- 04/15/1887

Samuel A. Hammond h/o Sarah J., 08/16/1825- 11/07/1903

I believe the above 3 people are those whose bodies were re-interred. All are buried in Pleasant Hill cemetery, Bk 6 Lot 9. Also buried in Bk 6 Lot 9 are Sarah d. 1917, David Hammond d. 1932 and Mabel B. Hammond d. 1938
