Gerrit Popma, long time resident of Orange City, died Saturday morning [December 9] in a local hospital of the effects of a paralytic stroke suffered 2 weeks ago. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the home at 1 p.m. and in the First Reformed church at 1:30 with Rev. Mr. Henry Colenbrander officiating.

Mr. Popma was born in The Netherlands, March 25, 1861 and came to America at the age of 4. The family came to Pella and then to Sioux county in 1884. He was in the barber business here for 52 years.

In 1884, he was married to Jennie Nieuwendorp and she died June 24, 1901. Their children were Albert of Cherokee, Chris of Dixon, Ill., Nellie, Mrs. Gerrit Top of Newkirk, and Florence, Mrs. John Foxen of Sioux City. They all survive their father. One child, Harry died in 1901 at the age of 8 months and another, Katie, Mrs. Sip Sipma, died Dec. 9, 1912. In May 1903 Mr. Popma married Mrs. Anna Bomgaars, who, with her daughter Mrs. George Jarman of Lake Crystal, Minn., also survives him. The last remaining member of the family, Frank Popma, 86, lives at Maurice.
