Alton Democrat of Jun 21, 1902 Rock Valley News.
The dead body of a man was found in the Rock river, Friday evening about seven o'clock, by H. K. Semonsma, near his farm half a mile north of town. His face was badly disfigured by water so, he could not be recognized. The; body was at
once removed to the town hall and Coroner Huizenga called. Papers on his person stated that he was; W. H. Lavin of Fort Dodgo Iowa traveling salesman, for the Granger Inplement
Co., of that city.. He registed at the Warren hotel Tuesday evening, June three, the day of the M. W. A. picnic at this place. He was well dressed and had besides several account books and other papers, a watoh and about $1.80. His firm at Fort Dodge was at once notified by wire. The coroners inquest was held Saturday
afternoon, but adjoured until Monday.
It is thought he had been foully dealt with. The remains were shipped to Fort Dodge, Sunday
for burial. His son-in-law, Ray Campbell took charge of them.
( No further info was found on his exact Identity. There was a William Lavin in Webster Co. in 1900 bon 1860 in IL, but not sure he is the one.)
