Sioux County Capital, January 24, 2000

Gertrude Van Kley, 92, of Sheldon died Saturday, January 20, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.

Services were at 11 a.m., Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Sheldon with a graveside service at 10:15 a.m., at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Mrs. Van Kley was born May 11, 1908 near Middleburg, the daugher of John & Alice (Hoeve) Vander Maten. She attended country schools in Sioux County near Middleburg. She married Arie Van Kley on January 22, 1931, at her parents' home in Orange City. The couple farmed north of Sheldon for 40 years until retiring in 1970, when they moved into Sheldon. He died December 5, 1987, in Sheldon. She moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon in October 1997 and later to Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon on December 29, 1999.

She was an active member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, quilting, sewing, flowers and gardening.

Survivors include her children, Joyce & Elmer Den Hartog of Sheldon; Arlin & Carol Van Kley of Sheldon, and Eldean and Art Franken of Sioux Center; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one sister, Allie Van Peursem of Orange City; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Melles of Orange City.

She was also preceded in death by one sister and five brothers.
