Hessel Dykstra, 81, Sanborn , died Friday May 4, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Services were Wednesday, May 9, at First Reformed Church in Sanborn, with the Rev. Gary Hegstad officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.

Hessel Dykstra, son of Hessel and Gertie (Vander Zwaag) was born March 29, 1920 in Middleburg. He lived his youth in Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School and Sheldon Junior College. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then attended Drake University in Des Moines, graduating with an L.L.D degree in 1952. He married Arlene Kleinwolterink on April 25, 1947. He established a law practice in Sanborn in 1952. He worked as a bodily injury adjuster for the Farm Bureau 1953-1971, when he retired. He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sanborn, where he served as Sunday school teacher, catechism instructor, RCYF leader and an elder. He also was a member of Earl T. Conaway Post 318 and the Iowa Bar Association. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, gardener and camper. He also enjoyed following the North western College football team.

Survivors include his wife , Arlene of Sanborn; four children, Linda and Wendell Ebbens of Sterling, IL, Sandra and Mark Frohwein of Denver, Lowell and Judy Dykstra of Sanborn and Sharon and Bruce McElhinney of Davenport; grandchildren Krista and Kevin Ebbens, Molly and Grant Frohwein, and Jill and Jonathan Dykstra; and a sister Gertrude Hulst of Hospers
