Obituary: Ireton, Iowa- Howard G. Van Oort, 86, of Ireton, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Reformed Church in Ireton, with Rev. Doug Van Aartsen officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by the American Legion Bertram Post #276. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Porter Funeral Home in Ireton. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Howard G. Van Oort was born September 30, 1922 in Orange City, Iowa, the son of William and Ethel (Muilenberg) Van Oort. He graduated from the Hull, Iowa High School and served with the US Army from March of 1943 to February of 1946. Howard was with the 8th Armored Division, serving 1 ½ years on the front lines during WWII.
He married the love of his life, Mildred JoAnn Schoep on June 20, 1946 in Hospers, Iowa. The couple was blessed with three children, Sharon, David, and Dennis. They moved to Sioux Center where he was the foreman of the Co-op Produce Poultry Department for 8 years. Howard purchased the Ireton Produce in 1953 and the family moved to Ireton. His father William later joined him in the business and in 1961 Howard’s brother-in-law, John Reinders, Jr., purchased William’s half interest. Howard had seen many changes throughout the years in the business and he retired in 1984, when his son, Dennis took over the business.Howard and Millie enjoyed spending 18 winters in Mesa, Arizona. Howard was very active in Ireton, serving on the Security Savings Bank board for 28 years, also on the city council for 9 years, and on the West Sioux Educational Foundation board. Howard was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church where he was a past Deacon, Elder, Sunday School teacher and Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He held various offices with the West Sioux Classis of the Reformed Church of America and also helped organize Inspiration Hills in 1970 and served on its board for 10 years, 3 years as president. He worked on several mission stations and new church starts, and spent many hours refurbishing wheel chairs for Hope Haven.
Howard is survived by his wife, Millie; his daughter, Sherri and her husband Gary Hietbrink of Worthington, Minnesota, and their three children, Michelle and husband Torey Schroeder and children, Morgan and Brooklyn; Jason, and Jessica and husband Matthew Mydland; his son, David and his wife Lavonne (De Jong) of New Hampton, Iowa and their two children, Jaclyn and Cristopher; and his son, Dennis and his wife Kristin (Ter Horst) of Ireton, and their two children, Nicholas and wife Holly and children, Karsen and Kolten; and Jenna; his siblings, Marilyn and husband Rev. Donald Thrash of Dayton, Ohio, Harris and wife Rita Van Oort of Omaha, Nebraska, and Carol and husband John Reinders, Jr. of Ireton.
