JOHN VAN BALLEGOOYEN, 77, of rural Hawarden, Iowa died Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden with Rev. Tom Van Engen and Pastor Larry Nilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is in charge of arrangements, www.porterfuneralhomes.com. The family requests memorials are directed to World Home Missions through the Christian Reformed Church.
John Van Ballegooyen was born January 4, 1931 north of Hawarden, Iowa to Andrew and Allie (Bosch) Van Ballegooyen. John's mother passed away in 1935 and his father married Alice Bryson in 1936. John attended rural school near Hawarden and Ireton, Iowa. John married Grada Kooi on January 24, 1951 at Lebanon, Iowa. Together they farmed and raised their family west of Hawarden in Union County, South Dakota. John enjoyed farming, and raising cattle and hogs. He loved woodworking as a hobby and made many wood projects for family, friends, and benefits. They enjoyed camping, traveling, and visiting with their many friends.
John served on many boards, including the Scott Creek Watershed, World Home Missions, and Hope Haven. He served at the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church as an Elder, Deacon, and as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent.
John is survived by his wife, Grada; 5 children and their spouses, Marsha (Harlan) Moss of Hull, Iowa, John (Pam) Van Ballegooyen, Greg (Lynn) Van Ballegooyen of Hawarden, Dan (Lori) Van Ballegooyen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Cheri (Jason) Van Holland of Bellevue, Nebraska; 2 brothers, Henry and wife Dreaka of Hawarden and Walter of Hawarden; 3 sisters, Mary Wilken of Ireton, Iowa, Dorothy Patcheck and husband Lee of Modesto, California, and Nancy Van Ballegooyen of Beresford, South Dakota; Grada’s family, Lane Kooi of Orange City, Iowa, George and Lari Kooi of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Alida and Marvin Scholten of Maurice, Iowa, Jean and Teunis Fluit of Larchwood, Iowa, and Linda and Ken Altena of Sioux Center, Iowa; also 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his father; mother; step mother; 2 brothers, Joe and his wife Kathy and Robert; 2 brothers-in-law, Bill Wilken and Frank Elliot; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Kooi.
