Death Calls A. W. Johnson

A. W. Johnson, pioneer resident of this vicinity, passed away at his home in Sioux City about 8 o'clock last Friday evening from a heart attack. Mr. Johnson returned home from work about 5 o'clock and was stricken shortly after. Mrs. Johnson immediately called their son, Dr. Quinton Johnson of Sioux City, and while he administered to his father, death called him within a short period of time.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church in Sioux City at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon with Rev. S. D. Huff, the pastor, in charge. The remains were then brought to Big Springs and another service was held in the Baptist church here at 3:15 with Rev. R. A. Dahlquist in charge. Interment was made in the Big Springs cemetery.

Aaron W. Johnson was born in Sweden May 24, 1862, and passed away June 3, 1938, having just passed his 76th birthday. His father and two brothers preceded him to America and 68 years ago he, in company with his mother and three other children, immigrated to America. His father homesteaded on what is known as the A. W. Johnson farm, just south of Big Springs. He grew to young manhood on this farm and later was married to Mary Nelson of Big Springs. After his marriage he continued to live on the old home farm until 1918 when he retired and moved to Sioux City where he lived for the past twenty years.

There were four children born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson who with their mother are left to mourn his sudden death. The children are Mrs. Mildred Olson, who resides on the old home farm; Mrs. Ed Olson of Big Springs; Dr. Quinton Johnson of Sioux City; and Elgin A. Johnson of Detroit, Mich. He also leaves two brothers, John A. Johnson of Hawarden and Chas. Johnson of San Jose, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Ida Ring of San Jose, Calif. There are also 10 grandchildren.

During his residence in this community Mr. Johnson took an active part in church and public affairs. He was a member of the Big Springs Baptist church for many years and was one of the staunch supporters of the church while he resided here. After moving to Sioux City Mr. Johnson transferred his membership to the First Baptist church in that city and served as deacon for a number of years. For many years he was secretary of the Farmers Mutual Insurance company of Union county and thus formed a large acquaintance throughout the entire county. He held this position until he moved to Sioux City. He also served Union county in the legislature one term. Mr. Johnson was a man of high ideals and was honest and upright with his fellowmen and his loss will be keenly felt not only by members of his family but among a large circle of friends.
