William Kohl
May 24, 1919 - May 18, 2012

Mr. William Kohl, age 92, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2012, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, May 22, at 10:00am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jonathan Opgenorth will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

William August was born on May 24, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John and Catherine (Hilgert) Kohl. He was raised in Chicago, where his first job was selling hotdogs in Wrigley Field. He also delivered newspapers using his bicycle.

On August 14, 1953, he married Frances Van Rosendale in Chicago. They made their home in the Chicago area, where he was employed by the International Harvester Company. They later retired to Orange City. In 2004, they became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. Frances passed away on March 31, 2009, in Orange City.
In the spring of 2009, Bill moved to the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

He was currently a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. In earlier years, he belonged to the First Reformed Church in Chicago and the Thorn Creek Reformed Church in South Holland, Illinois. He served in all the offices at these churches and taught Sunday school classes for over fifty years.

He was an avid reader, especially about the Civil War, and he enjoyed photography. Bill and Frances travelled extensively, both domestically and abroad, particularly in Europe. He attended all of the games of the Northwestern College basketball and football teams in Orange City. He even attended their practices, which resulted in him being awarded an honorary "N".

Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Kathy and Gary Davis, of Sioux City; four grandchildren and their spouses, Shanon De Jong and Anthony Puglisi, of Glendale, California; Lt. Tom A. and Danielle De Jong, of Key West, Florida; Melanie De Jong and Lt. Ben Martinez, of San Diego, California; and Amy De Jong, of Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic; a great-grandson, California Puglisi; a sister, Lois Sapinski, of Brookfield, Illinois; two adopted daughters, Betty and Nellie Fay Kohl; and several nephews and nieces and grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
