Mrs. Ellen Smit, age 82, of Hull, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2012, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, May 16, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Carl Klompien will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Ellen was born on March 1, 1930, in Hull, the daughter of Peter and Nellie (Langstraat) Cuperus. She was raised at Hull, where she graduated from the Christian School.

On December 7, 1949, she married Adrian Van Hofwegen in Hull. They made their home mostly in Colton, South Dakota. Sometime later, that marriage ended.
On November 19, 1973, she married Egbert Bonestroo in Hull. They made their home in Hull. Egbert passed away on November 18, 1986, in Sioux Center.
On January 29, 1993, she married Albert Blom in Nashua. They made their home in Worthington, Minnesota, and Hull. "Al" passed away on January 14, 1999, in Rock Valley.
On March 14, 2003, she married Anthony J. Smit in Hull. They made their home in Hull.
In January of 2012, Mrs. Smit became a resident of Royale Meadows.
Ellen was employed in a variety of occupations but was always also a homemaker.
She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church.
She enjoyed quilting and donated many quilts to fundraisers, especially for schools.

Survivors include her husband of nine years, Anthony; four children and their spouses, Noella and Edwin Haveman, of Hull; Peter and Sharleen Van Hofwegen, of Colton; Bonnie and Philip De Stigter, of Sioux Center; and LuAnn and Eldon De Wild, of Hull; eight step-children and their spouses, Elaine De Leeuw, of Sioux Center; Howard and LaJean Bonestroo, of Doon; Arlan and Glenda Bonestroo and David and Diane Bonestroo, all of Hull; Marcene Trudell, of Kuna, Idaho; James and Carol Smit, of Omaha, Nebraska; Mary and Don Krommendyk, of Hull; and Marlys and Jerry De Groot, of Alton; fourteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Anderson, of Hull; and Nelvina Matthews, of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho; and a brother, Peter Cuperus, of George.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stacey Van Hofwegen; and two brothers, Elmer and Calvin Cuperus.
