From the Alton Democrat of Oct 26, 1901

Joseph Jonas of Alton died at the insame asylum at Clarinda Tuesday night having been there about a year. John Thelen, an uncle of the deceased, went to Clarinda Wednesday and returned with the remains on Thursday. The funeral was held from St. Mary's church Thursday at eleven thirty. On February 9, 1900 Mr. Jonas's wife died of troubles arising from child birth, leaving seven children besides the babe in arms. The blow and responsibility of caring for eight small children unbalanced Mr. Jonas's mind. He was taken first to a private asylum at Oshkosh Wisconsin but growing worse was taken to Clarinda. He has since then gradually declined. The case is peculiarly sad on and the bereaved children have the sympathy of the community. Mr. Jonas was born in Eifel Germany forty nine years ago. His parents are still living there. the grave was left open till evening in order that his only brother from Oklahoma city might get here to view the remains.
