Robert Schiefen of Hawarden , the sole survivors in a one car accident last week involving five Hawarden youth, was listed Tuesday in “satisfactory” condition at the Hawarden Community Hospital. Robert Schiefen is reportedly recovering from head injuries and multiple cuts and bruises which he received when the car in which he and four other youth were riding, went off county road K-18 31/2 miles south of Hawarden last Wednesday night

The other four youth, who were fatally injured, were: Roger Schiefen, 17, Wayne Nelson, 16; Mark Hillrich, 14 and Armin Essick, 16
Investigating officer, Iowa State Trooper Art Jonker reports that the auto in which the five were riding was south bound on K-18 when it went into the ditch on the east side of the road and rolled 456 feet before crashing into a driveway and landing upright in a lane leading to a farm field. Trooper Jonker speculates that the mishap occurred around 10:40 p.m., about two hours after the five left FFA Christmas Party and initiation at Oak Grove State Park north of Hawarden. Trooper Jonker reports that the watch of one of the boys stopped at 10:40 p.m. and that the youths had been seen driving around Hawarden about 10:30 p.m. According to Trooper Jonker, all five youths were thrown from the vehicle and as of Tuesday, it had not been determined who was driving the auto at the time of the accident. Jonker said that one of the front wheels from the auto, 1971 Cutlass which was registered to Roger Schiefen, was found some 385 feet beyond the car and other wreckage had been strewn ever farther. The accident is still being investigated by the Iowa Highway Patrol.

Funeral services for the four youths were held Saturday (Obituaries On Page 2 Section 2). Parents of the five youth are Mr. Mrs. Lawrence J. Schiefen and Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Nelson, who farm near Hawarden on the South Dakota side; Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Hillrich who farm south of Hawarden and Mrs. And Mrs. LaVern Essick who have lived in Hawarden since moving here from Sioux City a few weeks ago.
